Summerval Lovin’ – Waterford launches Ireland’s longest festival celebration
You’ve heard of Winterval. Now get ready for Summerval, a brand new festival set to turn up the heat in the sunny southeast.
The new festival will run for 12 consecutive weekends from June 24 to September 24 in Waterford City and county, with dozens of events promised each week.
That will make it Ireland’s “longest festival celebration”, organisers claim.
“Winterval has attracted in excess of 450,000 visitors into Waterford City each year,” said festival chairman, Barry Monaghan.
“Whilst summertime in Waterford has always been a big draw for visitors, we believe that through amalgamating our strengths and creating new events, Summerval will provide a more compelling and considered offering which will attract many more people during summer weekends.”
Summerval sees 33 events scheduled for each weekend in Waterford City, Dunmore East, Tramore and the Copper Coast – almost half of them free.
Highlights of the festival include Saturday Street Theatre, Birds of Prey shows, a Taste of the Waterford Greenway, a Coastal Cycling Cruise, a Summerval Express Train in the City, a Viking Triangle Epic Tour and Yoga in the Park.
Summerval will run concurrently with festivals like Spraoi, the Viking Music Festival, Tramore’s Promenade Festival and Dunmore Food Festival, organisers say.
Free music events including a specially constructed Busking Corner will enliven Waterford City on Friday and Saturday nights, with free country music concerts every Saturday evening on a new Bulmers Summerval Stage in the Viking Triangle.
If the Waterford’s hurlers make a summer of their current form, they can also count on added cheers courtesy of GAA Sundays – with a big screen and Q&As with inter-county players set for the Viking Triangle on Championship match days.
